Shooting for England: my home international experience

Contact

Shooting for England at the Home International in Scotland was, for me, one of the best days of my shooting career so far. It felt like the result of a long journey, especially after coming so close to making the team the year before. Missing out only pushed me harder, and I’d set my sights on making 2025 the year I earned my place.

The season had already given me a few memorable moments. Winning AA Class at the English Open Supersporting after my first proper tense shoot‑off was a big milestone. The very next day, I followed it up with a 100 straight at Hangman’s Stone registered, something that really meant a lot as it showed me I was heading in the right direction.

The practice day before the Home International was interesting. I remember coming off my first round thinking, “I’m not sure how this is going to go tomorrow.” Nothing felt quite settled. After a break, we went back out for another round and halfway through I turned to Chloe with a smile because something had clicked. I knew then that the next day was likely to go my way.

On the day of the shoot, I started slowly: one down on the first stand, another down on the second. I gave myself a bit of a talking‑to, reset, and from that point onwards things started to come together. I was straighting stand after stand, feeling more focused and more in control with each target. It felt good – not perfect, but still solid and I finished my first England cap with 87/100.

Later came the shoot‑off for New Cap High Gun, in front of everyone. It was one of those moments where you just have to trust yourself and get on with it. I was fortunate enough to win it, which was a great way to end the day.

Looking back, the main feeling was pride. Not just in the score, but in the whole journey leading up to it the near miss the year before, the practice, the ups, downs and everything in between. Wearing an England jersey for the first time is something I’ll always remember.

I’m grateful for the experience and I’m looking forward to seeing where things go from here. And hopefully, I’ll get the chance to do it again.
